HISTORY


Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine “Bukovinan State Medical University” is one of the leading educational establishments of Ukraine. Its history is an integral part of the intellectual, cultural and spiritual history of Bukovyna. The prehistory of the University’s establishment is connected with the reorganization of the Second Kyiv State Medical Institute, founded on March 1, 1931, which in 1941 was evacuated to the city of Chelyabinsk. Since during the war, Bukovyna was not almost destroyed, Resolution No. 1360 of October 20, 1944 restored the activities of the 2nd Kiev Medical Institute with the Medical Faculty in Chernivtsi.


With the beginning of its activities, the Institute becomes scientific and methodical, medical and preventive centre of Bukovyna. Scientists, together with local health authorities eliminated epidemic typhus (1944) and relapsing typhus (1945) epidemics in the province, prevented typhoid fever (1945), eliminated a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (1944–1948), tuberculosis (1944–1958), endemic goitre (1946–1963), reduced infant mortality 15 times (1944–1968) as less. Soon, the universal recognition, not only in Ukraine, but also beyond its borders, was obtained by the scientific researches of the Institute’s scientists (rector M.  M.  Kovalev, 1954–1962), on the problems of the pathology of the nervous system, especially neuroinfection (Professor S.  M.  Savenko), Psychiatry (Professor G.  Yu.  Malis), gastroenterology (professors N.  B.  Shchupak, V.  A. Triger, O.  I.  Samson), endocrinology (professors Y.  D.  Kirshenblat, N.  M.  Shinkerman, M.  M.  Kovalev, associate professor B.  B.  Rodnyansky), embryotopography (professors M.  G.  Turkevich, V.  M.  Krojiak), ophthalmology (Professor B.  L.  Radzikhovsky), the synthesis of new antimicrobial substances (professors G.  P.  Pisko, G.  A.  Trojan, G.  K.  Palyi, Yu. L. Volyansky).


Since the end of the 1950’s the educational and resource base of the Institute has been improved and significantly expanded. The reconstruction of some educational buildings was carried out, four new hostels for students were built, the University sports complex, the dining room and Complex of consumer services for students started to work, vivarium and utility unit were built. In 1958, on the banks of the Dniester River near the village Repuzhintsy a sports and recreation camp for students and staff of the Institute for 250 places was arranged. In 1963, thanks to the efforts of talented students of Chernivtsi Medical Institute, an amateur ensemble of folk songs and dance “Trembita” was created.


In 1970–1990, an important role in popularization of Chernivtsi Medical Institute was played by the activities of well-known scientists in the country and abroad such as: P.  M.  Gudzenkо, T.  K.  Nabuhotny (Pediatrics); I.  K.  Vladkovskii, V.  K.  Chernetsky (Neurology); O.  S.  Sokol (Taraban), V. P. Lipkovsky, A. M. Mihaylova (Infectious Diseases); G.  Yu.  Malisa, Yu.  A.  Antropova (Psychiatry); D.  O.  Bitchenko, O.  O.  Gladkova (ENT), B. A. Pakhmurnyi, A. I. Gozhenko, L. M. Ochelenko (Pathophysiology); Y. D. Kirshenblata (Normal Physiology and Endocrinology); V.  L.  Kenkina, L. I. Romana, S. A. Kats, B. O. Milkova (Surgery); V. A. Trigera, O. I. Samson (Internal Diseases).


Chernivtsi Medical Institute was reorganized by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Order of No.  312 of 04.04.1997 into Bukovinian State Medical Academy.

In the early 2000’s, the University gained a new dynamic development. In 2001, Chernivtsi City Council transferred the Academic Palace, to the balance of the BSMA, which became the centre of student leisure and creativity. In 2003, the Faculty of Postgraduate Education was founded, which made it possible for the graduates to receive specialization and qualification at their native Alma Mater. In 2004 the Pharmaceutical Faculty, in 2008 the Faculty of Dentistry were opened, in 2011 the Medical Faculty №3, which prepares foreign citizens, was established.


In 2005, on the basis of the Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated March 2, 2005 No. 46-r and the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine of March 15, 2005 No. 110 “On the Reorganization of Bukovinian State Medical Academy”, the higher educational institution was reorganized into Bukovinian State Medical University. According to the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated 29.05.1997 No. 526 and the Order of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine dated 20.06.1997 No. 218 BSMU subordinated higher medical educational institutions of the I–II accreditation level (Chernivtsi, Novoselytsia, Vashkivtsi medical colleges). In 2010, the Association of Graduates was established, which organizes and maintains close relations with all graduates of the University. In order to provide training of junior medical and pharmaceutical specialists in 2013, BSMU College was created.

During the period of existence of the educational institution, 30115 graduates got their Diplomas including 20842 general practitioners, 1929 paediatricians, 427 dispensing chemists, 838 dentists, 238 medical psychologists, 573 pharmaceutical chemists, 377 bachelors of Pharmacy, 1446 pharmacists, 44 medical registered nurses, 904 medical nurses-bachelors, 1004 practical nurses, and 187 laboratory assistants. Among the graduates 1306 doctors are foreign citizens from 31 countries of the world. Nowadays Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine “Bukovinan State Medical University” is well-known in Ukraine and abroad as a scientific and educational institution with a rich practical experience, and glorious traditions.

The formation and development of the University is associated with the life and activity of its talented leaders. The University was headed by Ye. I. Kefeli – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Acting Director of 2nd Kyiv Medical Institute in Chernivtsi (1944–1945); G.  A.  Lichman  – Acting Director of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1945); D. S. Lovlia – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Director of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1945–1951); M. B. Mankovsky – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine, Director of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1951–1954); M. M. Kovaliov – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Rector of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1954–1962); O.  D.  Yukhymets  – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Rector of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1962–1974); V. K. Patratiy – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Higher School of Ukraine, Rector of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1974–1993); V. P. Pishak – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Public Education of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher School of Ukraine, Rector of Chernivtsi State Medical Institute (1993–1997), Bukovinian State Medical Academy (1997–2005), Bukovinian State Medical University (2005–2010).


Since 2010 till now, Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine “Bukovinian State Medical University” is headed by Taras Mykolayovych Boychuk, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Science and Technology Worker of Ukraine.

The University is proud of its graduates, including a whole constellation of prominent scholars and public figures who are known not only in Ukraine but also far beyond its borders Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine G. V. Gayko – Director of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine; Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine D. I. Zabolotnyi – Director of the Governmental Institution “Institute of Otolaryngology named after Prof. A.  S.  Kolomiychenko the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”; Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine M. G. Prodanchuk – Director of the L. I. Medved “Research Centre of Preventive Toxicology, Food and Chemical Safety, Ministry of Health of Ukraine”; Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine D. D. Zerbino – Director of the Institute of Clinical Pathology of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University; prof. A.  I.  Gozhenko  – Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Transplantation Medicine; Professor N.  V.  Elstein a chief physician of Estonia, the Honoured Doctor of Estonia. Yu. P. Spizhenko – Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine served as Minister of Health of Ukraine (1992–1994).

The talented students of the Institute, and in future well-known scholars and public figures were the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassadors of Ukraine in India (Professor G.  I.  Khodorovsky) and Romania (Professor L. I. Sandulyak).

Many University graduates work in the countries of near and far abroad. BSMU provides not only a high level of professional training of doctors, but also provides all the opportunities for the development of talents. Thus, during studies at the Institute, the talent of the famous in Ukraine and throughout the world cultural worker, winner of Taras Shevchenko State Prize, composer, poet, musician and performer of pop and folk songs V. Ivasyuk flourished with all colours.

During the student years at the medical institute, the talent of the poet-songwriter, People’s Artist of Ukraine, public figure M. Tkach, as well as the Prize Winner of the Golden Medal of UNESCO “Golden Name of World Culture”, surgeon, pianist, composer J. Elgiser, were revealed.
